Valencia Lubin March 20,2013 Why Schools Should Implement Bullying Awareness Programs Imagine having nightmares every night, pleading to your parents not to go to school the following day; all because of torment from fellow classmates. Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone; typically to force him or her to do what one wants. Schools should be required to implement bullying awareness programs. The implementation of these programs can help bullies realize the effects that their actions have on their peers and provide them with guidance to become a better person in the future. The programs will also put a stop to alienation and students will learn how to respect their peers. Most†¦show more content†¦According to stopbullying.gov, there are several policies and rules that work to prevent bullying. One example is a school mission statement. The mission statement establishes the vision for the school. It also goes on to state a code of conduct that is set in place should describe positive behaviors expected in the school commu nity. Schools should include the mission statement and code of conduct inside the school handbook and have the students read and sign it. The school should take it a step further and have the parents read and sign the handbook as well. This will allow the parent and child to read the school policies together and understand what is expected of them in the school community. In addition, stopbullying.gov suggests a student bill of rights should include positive things students can expect at school. For example: to be treated with respect and learn in a safe and friendly environment. Lastly, the website suggests establishing a reporting system. This system will help the faculty members track individual incidents and responses as well as trends over time. To further the argument that schools should be implemented to have bullying programs, the programs will help bullies in life.
